We all know that all cars get their comparative engine performance metric denoted directly after the series number. You have your 228i, 335i, 535d, 650i, and so on. However, the X-series and the Z roadster place it after the drive designation. This gives you the X1 xDrive28i, X3 sDrive28i, X5 xDrive35d, Z4 sDrive35i, and all the other jumbles.

Why doesn’t BMW join the performance metric to the series number on every model, matching the cars?

Wouldn’t it allow consumers to realize that an X5 xDrive35i is the SAV equivalent to the 535i? You can quickly discern that an X428i xDrive is a coupe-ish crossover in line with the 428i xDrive. Heck, they wouldn’t even need the sDrive badge this way (though they can keep it if they want I guess). Even M-sport variants like the M235i could lead to an M550i xDrive, X550i M xDrive, or Z435i M.

I know it sucks anyway it’s done, but I think this slight change would at least make the model alignments even more apparent. I always thought the X5 and X6 were larger than they actually are because I know they are the top of the SAV ladder for BMW. There isn’t a dedicated 3-three row X7-series or anything.

Bonus Question: Can BMW (or Porsche, Bentley, Aston, Jaguar, etc.) keep their sporty image while making a CUV with a standard 3-rows?

What are the differences between ActiveHybrid, eDrive, i-series, and when something receives an “e” directly after all the numbers?

There is an X5 that uses the 2.0L and the “eDrive” electric motor system, which allows it to put down over 300hp and over 330lb-ft of torque total system output. This gives you something called the X5 xdrive40e. Now, I’m assuming the torque figure is why they list it as a “40” even though I think those stats have more of a modern 3.5L equivalency to them. But that’s beside things.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Emphasis mine obviously, but that is straight from BMWUSA’s site. They push the eDrive a lot for it to not make it onto the actual vehicle name. Seems something like X5 eDrive40i would make sense. I also wonder why this isn’t an i-series vehicle, something like an i-X5. Is it just due to styling?

Then there is the ActiveHybrid 5, why not call it a 535h? What do you do when you want to turn your 2-series Active Tourer into a hybrid. Will we be reading articles about BMW 225i xDrive Active Tourer ActiveHybrid? I’m lost.

Your screen name aptly describes my feelings on the current BMW naming scheme.

Apparently it’s BMW 225xe Active Tourer, and the e stands for plug-in hybrid, the ActiveHybrid is a regular old hybrid and the i-series is a sub brand with electric vehicles built from the ground up.

Honestly it’s not that bad once you know what every letter means.

Why isn’t it an xDrive i can’t understand, maybe because its a front-wheel drive based system?

On top of the official naming schemes, folks around here seem to refer to different model BMWs as EXX, I suppose to refer to a specific chassis or body generation. I’ve never cared enough about BMWs to learn what they mean. It all just flies over my head.

Rumours are that a 3-row X7 is coming soon-ish.

That would basically be what Merc has done:

C 300 - GLC 300

E 350 - GLE 350

Does that x in 225x mean xDrive now? It comes before the e, so will the next X3 xDrive35i be an X335xi? And if it were a regular hybrid, would it be 225xi Active Tourer ActiveHybrid? I agree, the nomenclature is simple when you understand every letter, the problem is I’m getting lost with how they work together.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that as well. It’s rough when you’re into everything, not just a couple models, lines, or brands here and there.

I can believe it, no sense avoiding profit!

Exactly, and it was a smart idea. BMW just needs a small tweak to the badges, not the killing off or refresh of every model in their lineup.

I agree it was smart but there are still people, even here on Oppo, that think it’s horrible and completely confusing somehow.
